Itinerary

Day 1. Arrive San José
Tour begins: Real InterContinental Costa Rica at 6:00 PM. Welcome to Costa Rica, home to beautiful cloud forests, lush rainforests, and tropical jungles. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel, surrounded by tropical gardens within a fashionable San José suburb. Join us this evening for a welcome reception and dinner. Meals D

Day 2. Monteverde Cloud Forest
Travel to Monteverde today. Discover the unique ecology of the region with an expert naturalist, as you walk across suspension bridges crisscrossing the forested canyons of the tree canopies, rich with birdlife and wildlife. Stay in a jungle lodge in the middle of the cloud forest, much cooler than the hot, humid lowland forests, and home to colorful toucans, agouti, and monkeys. Meals BLD

Day 3. Monteverde Butterfly Garden
Learn all about butterflies from the unique, sound-producing Calico to the beautiful Blue Morpho at the Monteverde Butterfly Garden, dedicated to educating visitors about the vast array of butterflies and insects native to Costa Rica. Situated between the town of Santa Elena and the Monteverde Reserve, and home to more than 50 native butterfly species, the garden features a biodiversity center, a medicinal plant garden, and four climate-controlled butterfly gardens, each representing a different Costa Rican habitat. Meet naturalists who provide you with detailed information on the complex life cycles of these beautiful insects. Meals BLD

Day 4. Arenal Volcano / Hot Springs
A drive past some of Costa Rica’s abundant coffee plantations and cattle farms takes you to Arenal National Park, a 30,000-acre park that preserves eight out of Costa Rica’s 12 biological zones and is home to Arenal Volcano. One of the world’s most active volcanoes, cone-shaped Arenal has been continuously erupting since waking from a long slumber in 1968. Plumes of smoke – and sometimes flowing lava – can be seen spewing from its top. Take a short cruise across majestic Lake Arenal today, and enjoy a therapeutic soak in private volcanically-heated hot springs before continuing on to your rainforest resort for a two-night stay. Meals BLD

Day 5. Penas Blancas River Float Trip
Head into the jungle today for a gentle float trip down the scenic, wildlife-rich Penas Blancas River; your bilingual guide will help you spot giant iguanas, sloths, crocodiles, monkeys, and other wildlife on the shore. Stop along the way to visit the home of a local farmer and his extended family. Return to your resort, nestled along the banks of the San Carlos River in the heart of Costa Rica’s most noted ecosystem, for an afternoon spent as you please. Tilajari Resort offers a wide variety of adventures celebrating its array of natural treasures, as well as activities such as tennis and horseback riding, and botanical and butterfly gardens to explore. Meals BLD

Day 6. E.A.R.T.H. / Journey to Tortuguero
Depart for the Caribbean coastline of Costa Rica; visit E.A.R.T.H., a private agricultural university specializing in the tropics, where you’ll learn about the educational programs designed to seek a balance between agricultural production and environmental protection. After enjoying lunch at E.A.R.T.H., depart Costa Rica’s dense interior rainforests and continue on to Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast. A cruise through jungle-lined canals brings you to your riverfront lodge within Tortuguero National Park, which in the summer is one of the world’s largest and most important nesting sites for green sea turtles. Accessible only by boat, Tortuga Lodge is surrounded by landscaped grounds and orchid-filled gardens; keep an eye out for turtles, caimans, otters and crocodiles in the river, or sloths, spider monkeys and toucans in the trees. Gardens of blooming flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds by day, and by night the songs of howler monkeys are heard. Meals BLD

Day 7. Tortuguero National Park
One of the most varied of Costa Rica’s national parks, Tortuguero has 11 ecological habitats ranging from high rainforest to herbaceous marshes. Spend the day exploring the park on private morning and afternoon cruises through the region’s waterways accompanied by a naturalist guide, who shares insights of the diverse sights you may see in the water and along the shore. Visit the town of Tortuguero for a glimpse of daily life and learn more about the region’s endangered sea turtles at the Caribbean Conservation Learning Center. Join us tonight for a farewell dinner. Meals BLD

Day 8. Journey Home
Fly to San José this morning on a private charter flight. Tour ends: San José Santa Maria Int’l Airport at 10:00 AM. Allow a minimum of 21/2 hours for flight check-in. 2. Mexico / Board Train
More than a century of habitation in this desert valley has created a unique blend of cultures. See the downtown area, then travel to San Xavier del Bac Mission. Built in the 18th century, the double-towered white mission is a striking blend of Spanish, Moorish and Mexican styles. Following lunch in the historic community of Tubac, cross the Mexican border to Nogales for a private rail journey aboard the Sierra Madre Express. The entire train is reserved exclusively for Tauck’s guests; settle in, meet the crew and relax in the comfortable lounges of the train as your unforgettable journey begins! Meals BLD

Your accommodations have a style and design that reflects the Tarahumara influence as well as the local style and culture of the state of Chihuahua. Meals BLD

Arrive in Caldera and board Le Levant for the start of your 6-night cruise to the remote islands off the shores of Costa Rica and Panama. Meals BLD

• Day 5. Marenco Biological Reserve
Disembark Le Levant this morning for an excursion to Marenco Biological Reserve on the isolated Osa Peninsula, which is a rainforest ecological treasure trove. Transfer by local boat to the beach, where your naturalists guide you on a tropical trail hike adjacent to the reserve; learn about the ecosystems and wildlife of this pristine region, perhaps sighting toucans and scarlet macaws who make their homes in the beautiful, tropical vegetation. You’ll also have an opportunity to swim in a natural freshwater stream that lies between the rainforest and the ocean’s shore before returning to the ship. Please join us for the Captain’s dinner this evening as Le Levant makes its way to beautiful Coiba Island. Meals BLD

• Day 6. Coiba Island National Park
Arrive at Granita del Oro, a tiny island that is ideal for snorkeling over the colorful coral reef. Due to its remote location, unspoiled Coiba Island, named a national park in 1993, remains pristine and virtually untouched by visitors. Le Levant anchors off the secluded white sand beach, where Zodiacs bring you ashore for what is often a wet landing. This relaxing island paradise is the ideal spot for water activities, including snorkeling. You’ll have a chance to do some swimming, and enjoy an outdoor barbecue, before setting sail for the Darien Province. Meals BLD

• Day 7. Explore the Darien Province
Experience Panama’s remote Darien Province today, one of the most ecologically diverse regions of Central America. Take a fascinating excursion to a remote village nestled on the banks of the Mogue River, and get an up-close look at daily life. Today’s active adventure includes traveling upriver by cayucos, motorized canoe-like fishing boats, followed by a short hike on rough terrain to one of the isolated villages found in this region; most of these villages are largely unaffected by modern times. Learn about the routines of everyday life in the jungle; witness the cultural traditions of local villagers, including their traditional dance, and view their cocobolo wood and tagua vegetable ivory carvings. This will be a day you’ll long remember! Return to Le Levant, and set sail for your transit through the Panama Canal. Meals BLD

• Day 8. Transit the Panama Canal
Opened in 1914, the Panama Canal is one of mankind’s most incredible endeavors. Aboard Le Levant, freely view the canal crossing from the open decks. It is approximately a ten-hour journey from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, during which time Le Levant enters three sets of locks – Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and the Gatún locks – and is raised and lowered a total of 85 ft. A local Panama Canal guide will provide commentary as Le Levant makes its way through the canal, which was one of the most challenging and difficult engineering projects ever undertaken – and today is one of the world’s most important shipping routes. While exact transit time through this 51-mile long canal cannot be guaranteed, your crossing is sure to be a treasured highlight of this cruise, any time of the day or night. Meals BLD

• Day 9. Discover the San Blas Islands
The 365 small, tropical islands of San Blas Province, home to the Kuna Indians, are blessed with beautiful beaches and swaying palm trees. These little-known islands are truly reminiscent of a South Seas paradise! Only a small number of the islands are inhabited; visit Achutupo Island, where you will visit a local village and meet the Kuna Indians. You’ll examine their hand-crafted molas, which are elaborately embroidered cloths depicting birds, animals, and mythical figures in cutwork applique. You may have an opportunity to swim and snorkel. Meals BLD

10. Disembark Colón / Panama City
A morning arrival in Colón, Panama, signals the end of your cruise. Travel to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort where it’s your choice of either an aerial tram ride with a naturalist, or a boat cruise with a naturalist. Have a buffet luncheon overlooking the river and the canal, featuring Panamanian food. Visit Miraflores Locks, southernmost and tallest of the three sets of locks on the Panama Canal. Arrive in Panama City for a sightseeing orientation tour that takes you through the modern section of the city, which is positioned to be a trading capital for the region. Please join us this evening for a farewell reception and dinner, marking the end of this extraordinary journey that was part adventure, part learning, and total enjoyment from sunrise to sundown! Meals BLD

11. Journey Home
Tour ends: Panama City, Panama. A transfer from the InterContinental Miramar Panama to Tocumen International Airport is included. Allow a minimum of 2 1/2 hours for flight check-in. Meals B

Isabela II has three decks, Main, Cabin, and Sun. The Sun Deck features a bar with deck chairs for outdoor seating, an observation deck for watching wildlife, a Jacuzzi, and a solarium. Her well-trained 27-member team consists of Ecuadorian officers, naturalists, and crew, as well as a resident physician. Cuisine aboard the ship is a combination of Continental and Ecuadorian, with varied menus. Shore excursions are by Zodiac-style “panga” and are available to everyone; Isabela II carries her own glass-bottom boat aboard for close-up observation of marine life.
