Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive Calgary / Lake Louise
Tour departs: 3:00 PM from Calgary Airport. Your family adventure in the Canadian Rockies starts with a trip to Lake Louise, surrounded by peaks that are still capped with snow in spring. Walk down to the lake and look up; it’s like you’ve stepped right into a picture postcard, where the forest around you is reflected in the mirror-like water. Spend your first night in this magical wonderland at one of the best mountain resorts in Canada, The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Head out along some of the resort’s excellent hiking trails, where the trees are tall, the flowers are colorful and the lake is inviting. Get things off to a great start at tonight’s welcome reception and dinner, where you’ll hear more about the adventures to come in the remarkable Rockies! Meals D

Day 2 – Emerald Lake / Icefields Parkway
Start an amazing day in the Rockies with a drive from Lake Louise to turquoise-blue Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park. You just can’t feel any closer to nature as you get acquainted with the region’s flora and fauna on a guided hike along the lake. After lunch at Emerald Lake Lodge, set off on an unforgettable journey along the Icefields Parkway to Jasper National Park. Look around and you’ll see why this stretch of highway is famous around the world – there are mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and snowfields as far as you can see... not to mention the moose, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, or bears you might spy along the way! Arrive at your home for the next three nights – an incredible lakefront resort right in the heart of Jasper National Park, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Meals BLD

Day 3 – Hike, bike, canoe... in Jasper National Park
As you wake up charged for a day of fun – your way – in Jasper National Park, get a good whiff of the wonderful aspen, fir, spruce, and lodgepole pine. It’s a perfect day to hike, swim, or – thanks to the Fun Card that each Tauck guest receives – rent a bike, canoe, paddle boat or kayak, play tennis or racquetball, or hit a bucket of balls at the driving range; the card is good for the entire time you’re staying at Jasper Park Lodge. Or take advantage of other optional activities (available at an additional charge) at the lodge, such as golf and horseback riding. You’ll have a great opportunity to talk with a park official about how wildlife is observed and monitored during a presentation on the natural history, legends, and lore of Canada’s national parks. Meals BD

Day 4 – Explore Maligne Canyon / Go river rafting
Check out cascading waterfalls, mysterious potholes, age-old fossils, lush plant life, and towering, chalky limestone walls as you explore Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park today. One of the most beautiful canyons in the Rockies, it was created about 160 million years ago by churning waters swirling through the Palliser Formation, a layer of limestone once covered by a shallow tropical sea. Look for the ripple marks of ancient waves imprinted on the rocks, as well as nesting ravens and rare black swifts. Then take off on an excellent whitewater raft trip along the glacier-fed Athabasca River; fresh from the massive Columbia Icefield, these same waters will eventually flow all the way into the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans! Meals BD

Day 5 – Columbia Icefield / Ice Explorer on a glacier
Get set for the ride of your life in the Columbia Icefield today. As you step across glacial ice more than 400 years old, look up and you’ll see what look like tiny toy trucks crawling along the ice. They’re specially designed Ice Explorer vehicles – and in a few minutes, you’ll be in one of them, climbing up the surface of Athabasca Glacier! Later, watch for soaring eagles, hawks, grizzlies and caribou as you return to the Icefields Parkway; wind your way between snow-domed peaks and immense hanging glaciers to Banff National Park for a two-night stay at The Fairmont Banff Springs. Your whole family will feel like royalty in this “castle in the mountains,” built after Canadian Pacific Railway workers discovered the Cave & Basin Hot Springs in the 1880s. Meals BL

Day 6 – Swim, hike, bowl... in Banff National Park
Between Banff National Park’s 2,500 square miles of valleys, mountains, glaciers, meadows and forests – and a luxurious resort offering tons of amenities and optional activities – there’s something sure to please every member of the family today. Moms, grandmas, and aunts might go shopping in the charming storybook village of Banff or relax in the world-class Willow Stream Spa, while dads are getting in a round of golf on a scenic championship course. And everyone can swim, bike, boat, hike, or simply enjoy the wonderful alpine scenery. Today, all guests will ride the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for amazing views (not to mention terrific photographs) of six mountain ranges, and visit the historic Cave & Basin, the Whyte Museum and the Banff Park Museum – plus receive discounted admission to the Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum – with an included Banff Heritage Pass. Tonight’s farewell bowling reception, featuring Canadian-style five-pin bowling at the Banff Bowling Center, is a fun way to say goodbye to the Canadian Rockies and wrap up an unforgettable family adventure! Meals BD

Day 7 – Journey Home
Travel back to Calgary this morning (approx. 80 miles). Tour ends: Calgary Airport at 10:00 AM. Allow a minimum of two hours for check-in; U.S. direct flights clear U.S. customs in Calgary. Meals B

Spend time in the historic town of Jackson and enjoy dinner on your own. Meals BL

Day 3 – Stay Inside Yellowstone National Park Journey to Yellowstone National Park today where your inside-the-park accommodations are just steps away from Old Faithful Geyser – which shoots its plume of steam skyward just about every hour! Join your Tauck Director for sightseeing that features some of the most famous geologic wonders of Yellowstone. You will have the unique opportunity on Cowboy Country to volunteer with park experts on a service project, made possible by Tauck’s long-standing relationship with America’s national parks. Tauck received a special Presidential Award for this on-tour volunteer program in the summer of 2006. Meals BD

Day 4 – Explore America’s Oldest National Park You’ll start your day with local experts who shed some light on the park’s abundant wildlife. Yellowstone National Park protects five threatened or endangered species, including the gray wolf, the whooping crane, the lynx, the bald eagle and the grizzly bear. This afternoon, go exploring with a local expert who offers special insights about the “restless” geology of the park, from its legendary trout streams and thundering waterfalls to its gurgling mud pots and volcanic calderas. With 10,000 hot springs, two-thirds of all geysers in the world, and lush forests, Yellowstone National Park inspires awe at every turn – and it is a photographer’s paradise. Meals BLD

Day 5 – Visit Cody, “Rodeo Capital of the World” Step back in time to the days of the Old West in historic Cody, founded by frontiersman “Buffalo” Bill Cody in 1896, the best known spokesman for the New West. Learn more about his quest to lure settlers to the western frontier at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, home to the world’s largest collection of artifacts depicting the culture, history and art of the American West. Admission to his famous Wild West Show in the late 1800s was only 10 cents for children and 25 cents for adults! Stunts will be performed at the rodeo tonight by steer wrestlers, wild buckin’ broncos, barrel riders and rodeo clowns – they put on a memorable show! Meals BD

Day 6 – Spend a Night at a Western Ranch Today’s drive through Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains includes some pretty amazing sights – watch for cowboys at work in the high altitude grasslands, a spectacular waterfall, all kinds of wildflowers, and deep canyons that make you see how this area was a real part of the “wild west.” Your destination today is The Ranch at Ucross, where you can get a taste of cowboy life during an overnight stay. The ranch offers many activities for family fun – take a leisurely horseback ride; catch a big Brown or Rainbow in Piney Creek or the ranch’s stocked trout pond; relax by the heated pool; pitch horseshoes; or hunt for frogs by the pond. A campfire in the evening caps a perfect day. Meals BLD

Day 7 – See Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore You’ll see some of the world’s largest sculptures today, nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota. View the work-in-progress at Crazy Horse Memorial, which is one of the world’s largest mountain carvings, before a special visit to Mt. Rushmore National Monument. Nothing compares to seeing in person the four famous presidential faces carved into rock – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. You’ll learn all about how 400 workers spent 14 years creating the dream of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The journey comes to an end this evening with a farewell dinner. Meals BD

Tour begins: 6:00 PM at Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage. Upon arrival, a transfer is included from Anchorage International Airport to Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage, a lakefront hotel with great views of Alaska’s mountains. Your Alaskan family adventure kicks off with a welcome dinner at the hotel tonight. Meals D

Day 2 – Explore the wilderness by jet boat
Venturing north into the interior of this last great frontier near the mountains of the Alaska Range, you’ll set off on two exciting outdoor adventures today. First, it’s all aboard the most technologically advanced river jet boat in Alaska – specially designed to navigate once inaccessible mountain rivers – which whisks you into the heart of the wilderness; with help from a local naturalist guide, look for bald eagles, beavers, moose and even bears along your river route, and get to know the region’s abundant wildflowers and plants. Then hike into the backwoods of bush Alaska for a visit to an authentic trapper’s cabin. See firsthand how hardy fur trappers lived and worked in this challenging environment at the turn of the 20th century, and try to imagine yourself in their shoes, living a life of wilderness adventure! Dig into a picnic lunch right along the riverbank before saying goodbye to the bush country and continuing on to Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge in Talkeetna or Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge in Trapper Creek for a two-night stay. If the weather cooperates, you’ll enjoy incredible views of Mt. McKinley, North America’s tallest mountain at 20,320 feet above sea level. Meals BLD

Day 3 – Meet Alaskan Huskies and a “musher”
Dog sledding is popular as both a sport and a practical form of transportation in Alaska’s interior; the Alaskan Huskies who pull the sleds in frigid weather have become beloved living symbols of the state, in part because of Alaska’s world-famous annual dog sled race, the Iditarod. Today, meet an Iditarod “musher” and future sled dogs on a visit to a summer training facility, where you’ll see how these amazing dogs are trained, taught voice commands and fed along the race trail, and learn how to harness and hitch up a dog. Some of the Huskies you’ll meet may one day compete in the Iditarod, the length of which actually varies but is symbolically listed as 1,049 miles – it’s always at least 1,000 miles long, while the 49 represents Alaska’s position as the 49th state. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy the amenities of your wilderness lodge at your leisure – perhaps exploring the nature trails through some of Alaska’s most spectacular scenery, or engaging in an array of optional activities at an additional cost that are available for children ages 8 and older. Meals B

Day 4 – Flightsee near Mount McKinley
Get set for an amazing bird’s-eye view of the vast Alaskan wilderness as you take off on a breathtaking flightseeing journey over the foothills of Denali National Park en route to the Kenai Peninsula. As you view the ice-clad summit of North America’s highest peak, Mt. McKinley, from the air, try and see if you can spot any determined climbers challenging the mountain along its massive south face. Out of the 1,000 or so mountaineers who attempt the ascent every climbing season (which runs between April and July), only about half successfully make it to the summit of what Native Americans call Denali (“the great one”). After this inspiring airborne excursion, you’ll have time to explore and enjoy lunch on your own in Anchorage this afternoon; Alaska’s largest city began life as a tent city for construction of the Alaska Railroad in 1914. Your family travel adventure continues to the Kenai Peninsula, fondly called “Alaska’s playground,” and your lodge accommodations for the next two nights at Seward Windsong Lodge in Seward or Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge in Cooper Landing. Meals BD

Day 5 – Discover the Kenai Peninsula
The beautiful Kenai Peninsula extends from the Alaskan mainland between Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska; explore the region today on a choice of selected activities including a kayaking adventure, a scenic river rafting trip, or a guided 5-mile wilderness hike. Optional opportunities for fishing are also available on a limited basis for an additional cost; river fishing is available to guests on departures staying in Cooper Landing, while those on departures staying in Seward can engage in open-water fishing. Meals BLD

Day 6 – Alaska SeaLife Center / Kenai Fjords cruise
An exclusive program for Tauck Bridges guests awaits this morning on a visit to Seward’s Alaska SeaLife Center, dedicated to understanding and maintaining Alaska’s incredibly diverse marine life from king crabs to the giant Pacific octopus. Watch diving puffins and a gliding, one-ton Steller seal through underwater viewing windows or a harbor seal resting on a rocky beach, all in carefully built naturalistic habitats. Later, embark on a cruise through the Kenai Fjords coastal region, one of the best places in North America to see a wide variety of wildlife and marine mammals. A naturalist will point out fascinating sights as you cruise; enjoy lunch on board. Arrive this afternoon at the Hotel Alyeska at the Alyeska Resort. Meals BD

Day 7 – Glacier rail journey / Iceberg rafting
Start another incredible day in Tauck Alaska with a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center on the shores of Turnagain Arm. Meet orphaned animals that are being rehabilitated here, from moose and muskox to bald eagles and grizzly bears. Get an eyeful of some pretty remarkable alpine scenery as you roll through rugged gorges, past spectacular peaks, and along a glacier-carved valley during a brief train ride on the Alaska Railroad to Spencer Glacier. Then climb aboard a raft for a scenic float trip among the icebergs and glacial ice of Spencer Lake and down the Placer River. Cap your family’s amazing week in the wilderness with our farewell dinner at the resort tonight. Meals BLD

Day 8 – Journey home
Tour ends: Anchorage, Alaska. A transfer from Alyeska Prince Hotel to Anchorage International Airport is included. Allow a minimum of 2 hours for flight check-in. Meals B

Meals D

Day 2 – A visit to Pearl Harbor and a surfing lesson Join us for a sightseeing tour of Oahu this morning, fondly called “the gathering place.” Born of two volcanoes whose mountain ranges form the backbones of the island, Oahu is home to mist-shrouded rainforests, jungle-clad roads, and protected crystalline bays perfect for snorkeling. Visit its most poignant sites at Pearl Harbor and see the USS Arizona Memorial, a lasting testament to the gallant service personnel who lost their lives here on December 7, 1941. Take surfing lessons this afternoon at beautiful Waikiki Beach, where gentle waves can offer a long ride even for beginners, then enjoy an afternoon of Hawaiian beach fun. Your hotel’s location is perfect, as the oceanfront setting along Waikiki provides memorable moments sunrise to sunset. Meals B

Day 3 – Fly to Maui / Go under water in an Aquarium
Fly to Maui for a two-night stay, renowned as one of the top beach vacation spots in the world. Known as the “Valley Isle,” you’ll see a lush landscape alive with the ancient legends, traditions, and rich historic legacy of her early Polynesian settlers. Begin your visit with a journey to the bottom of the sea at the Maui Ocean Center, uniquely dedicated to Hawaii’s marine life and the best place to meet the underwater residents of the islands. See spectacular live coral displays and Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles; awe at close encounters with sharks, rays and colorful tropical fish – while learning about Hawaii’s natural history and cultural heritage. The Aloha Welcome Chant is followed by a hula performance, a delicious Hawaiian-style breakfast, and interactive cultural encounters where you’ll experience the traditions of the early Hawaiians, see demonstrations and participate in activities such as poi pounding, throw-net fishing and kapa cloth making. Afterwards, spend some time in the coastal old whaling town of Lahaina, and return to your resort where endless possibilities exist for a day at the beach – or poolside. Meals B

You’ll have an opportunity to see some of the Pacific’s most bizarre volcanic scenery at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Lava tubes, craters, steam fissures and a landscape that looks more like the moon than a tropical Hawaiian island are just a few of the natural wonders found in this unusual national park. This area so resembles the moon that the astronauts on the first moon landing trained here. Arrive at your fabulous oceanfront resort for a three-night stay – Hilton Waikoloa Village is a destination all in itself, and is really a swimmer’s paradise. Meals BLD

Day 6 – A day as you please and a luau The most difficult decision today will be where to swim first, and how to make the most of your day! With three pools, a lagoon and the warm Pacific Ocean as swimming options your family may not even get to the tennis courts – or the golf courses – or the sand volleyball court... You also have an opportunity to do some sightseeing by helicopter today, for an additional $399 per person. End your day at a Hawaiian luau, where the food and entertainment are pure magic. The luau is one of Hawaii’s oldest celebrations; tonight you’ll have a chance to try traditional Hawaiian food, discover the music and dance of different Polynesian cultures, and who knows – you may even appear on stage yourself dancing the hula! A cruise aboard a sleek catamaran is enjoyable – shore and surf are sublime; educational – these waters are a true natural history paradise; and most of all – fun! All members of your family spend the remainder of the day as they please. Join us for a special evening on a historic 8,500-acre working ranch in the Kohala Mountains.
