Itinerary

Day 1:
Board your overnight transatlantic flight.

Day 2:
Arrival in Rome, Italy. Time to rest or start exploring the Eternal City. At 6 p.m. meet your Tour Director and traveling companions and leave the hotel for a special welcome dinner with wine at one of Rome’s lively restaurants. (D)

Day 3:
Rome. Sightseeing with your Local Guide starts with a visit to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and SISTINE CHAPEL, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgement. Continue to monumental ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA. Cross the Tiber and visit the COLOSSEUM and the ROMAN FORUM, where Roman Legions marched in triumph. Then time for independent activities and exciting optional excursions. (BB)

Day 4:
At Leisure in Rome. Another day to savor la dolce vita. If you feel like traveling, you may want to join an optional excursion to Pompeii, the Roman city both destroyed and preserved by a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. Tonight, why not join an optional dinner with local specialties and wine? (BB)

Day 5:
Rome–Pisa–Florence. Follow the Aurelian Way along the Tyrrhenian coast to Pisa. Here take your pictures of the amazing Leaning Tower, 180 feet high and no less than 12 feet out of the perpendicular. Then on to Florence, the splendid capital of Tuscany and the birthplace of the Renaissance. (BB,D)

Day 6:
Florence. Follow your Local Guide to the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS with Michelangelo’s David and the magnificent CATHEDRAL. Admire Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistry’s “Gate of Paradise,” and sculpture-studded SIGNORIA SQUARE. Afternoon free to relax or to find out more about Florence’s artistic wealth. An optional dinner at a typical Tuscan restaurant can be arranged. (BB)

Day 7:
Florence–Padua–Venice. A beautiful drive across the wooded Etruscan Apennine Mountains into the lush plains of the Po River will bring you to Padua, city of St. Anthony, for a visit to the majestic six-domed BASILICA. Time for lunch and independent exploration before continuing to Venice. (BB)

Day 8:
Venice. Enter in style by PRIVATE BOAT to meet your Local Guide. Highlights of your walking tour are ST. MARK’S SQUARE and the byzantine BASILICA, lavish DOGES’ PALACE and the BRIDGE OF SIGHS. Also watch skilled GLASSBLOWERS fashion their delicate objects in an age-old traditional manner. Then enjoy Venice at your own pace or join an optional gondola ride. (BB,D)

Day 9:
Venice–Assisi–Perugia. A comfortable drive to peaceful Assisi. Your Local Guide will show you the main sights. From St. Clare’s Church enjoy a pleasant walk via pretty Piazza del Comune down to ST. FRANCIS’ BASILICA, the hub of a religious order devoted to ideals of humility, forgiveness, simplicity, and love for God’s creatures. Hear about monastic life and view the priceless frescoes adorning the walls of the church. Then drive on to the capital of Umbria, Perugia, for an orientation and overnight stay. (BB,D)

Day 10:
Perugia–Ancona–Overnight Cruise to Patras, Greece. Depart for Ancona where you will board your high-speed FERRY for your overnight cruise to Greece. (BB,D)

Day 11:
Patras–Olympia. Dock at Patras and continue by coach to Olympia. (BB,D)

Day 12:
Olympia–Delphi. Focus on Olympia, where the athletes of antiquity performed in honor of the King of Deities. Learn about the history of those original Olympic Games as you walk with your Local Guide among the impressive remains of the GYMNASIUM and the Temples of Hera and Zeus. Visit the MUSEUM, which displays a magnificent statue of Hermes. In the afternoon return to Patras and proceed through the picturesque fishing villages along the southern coast to mythical Delphi. Day 13:
Delphi–Athens. Morning visit with a Local Guide to the ancient sanctuary of the god Apollo in its dramatic setting on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Hear about the Oracle and tour the EXCAVATIONS. Also visit the ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM to admire the Charioteer, an extraordinary 5th-century B.C. bronze statue. On your way to Athens your Tour Director will tell you about the history of Thebes, the setting of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, and Marathon, where in 490 B.C. 10,000 Athenians defeated more than twice that number of Persian invaders. Exciting possibilities for your first night in Athens include Plaka’s outdoor tavernas with their succulent local food and cool Retsina wines, and folk dancing reminiscent of Zorba the Greek! (BB)

Day 14:
Athens. Tour the capital’s classical sights with a Local Guide: the Parthenon’s crowning beauty atop the ACROPOLIS, the Erechtheum with its Porch of Maidens, the beautifully preserved Theseum, Roman Temple of Zeus, Theater of Dionysus, and the Agora where Socrates taught. Vistas of the Royal Palace, government buildings, and elegant homes in the modern city provide a striking contrast to the remains of a glorious past. Afternoon free for shopping and other independent activities. Later, you may wish to join an optional orientation drive and dinner at a fine restaurant overlooking the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus. (BB)

Day 15:
At Leisure in Athens. A full day at leisure. How about an optional day cruise to the islands of Aegina, Hydra, and Poros? (BB)

DAY 1 – FRI – DEPART USA
Overnight flight to Rome.

DAY 2 – SAT – ROME AT LEISURE
On arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport there are complimentary transfers to your tour hotel. Relax on the Via Veneto or stroll the Piazza Navona before joining your Tour Director and fellow travelers for a Welcome Drink.

DAY 3 – SUN – ROME SIGHTSEEING
Tour St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, seeing the Popes’ Altar by Bernini and Michelangelo’s Pieta. Now visit the Colosseum, scene of great entertainment in Imperial times and overlook the Roman Forum. Time at leisure this afternoon. (BB)

DAY 4 – MON – ROME – OVERNIGHT FERRY
Meet your local guide for a sightseeing tour of the priceless art in the Vatican Museums before admiring Michelangelo’s amazing ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Drive through vine-covered hills to visit the peaceful Commonwealth War Cemetery at Cassino. Stop at Pompeii, where a local expert will guide you around the excavations of the city, buried by an eruption in 79AD. Drive through the city of Naples before boarding an overnight ferry to Sicily. (BB)

DAY 5 – TUE – PALERMO – AGRIGENTO
Arrive in the early morning in Palermo where a guided tour will show you the cathedral, the Arab-Norman Palatine Chapel and the magnificent Monreale. Then it’s off to the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento, considered the finest Greek sanctuary in Sicily. See the impressive Temple of Concord and Temple of Juno, overlooking the sea.

DAY 6 – WED – AGRIGENTO – GIARDINI NAXOS
Travel into the heart of Sicily to visit the Roman Villa of Casale, noted for the mosaics which cover almost the entire floor. Descend to the east coast and follow the coastline of the Cyclops Riviera to Giardini Naxos.

DAY 7 – THU – TAORMINA EXCURSION
Tour the hillside town of Taormina. Founded in 400 BC, Taormina is beautifully located, facing the snowy peak of Mount Etna. Visit the Greek Theatre before free time to explore the sub-tropical terraced gardens, or stroll along elegant Corso Umberto to Piazza 9 Aprile for panoramic views across the bay. Return to Giardini Naxos where the rest of the day is at leisure. (BB,D)

DAY 8 – FRI – GIARDINI NAXOS – SORRENTO
Drive to Messina to board the ferry back to the Italian mainland. Continuing north past Salerno, take the cliff-top road to Sorrento.

DAY 9 – SAT – ISLE OF CAPRI EXCURSION
See the art of ‘intarsio’, or marquetry wood inlaying, before cruising to the island of Capri. A funicular train takes you up to Capri town to spend time browsing the shops and admiring the Mediterranean views. Perhaps visit Anacapri before returning to Sorrento. (BB,D)

DAY 10 – SUN – SORRENTO – ASSISI
Drive north into Umbria and continue to the walled town of Assisi, spread across the slopes of Monte Subasio. Stroll through the narrow streets and visit the Basilica of St Francis with its famous frescoes by Giotto before spending the afternoon at leisure. The energetic can climb up to the castle for fine views over the valley.

DAY 11 – MON – ASSISI – VENICE
Visit the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels, built to commemorate the site where St Francis died. Then a beautiful drive brings us through the wild Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic coastal plain. Drive along the scenic Brenta Canal with its magnificent Palladian villas, once the summer residences of Venetian nobility, to the romantic city of Venice, where your hotel overlooks the Grand Canal.

DAY 12 – TUE – VENICE SIGHTSEEING
Relax and enjoy the scenery as you travel by private launch to St Mark’s Square. See the Bridge of Sighs, connecting the Doges’ Palace to the prisons. See the ornate St Mark’s Basilica, followed by a demonstration of Venetian glass blowing. To truly appreciate this unique city, step aboard your gondola to glide along the peaceful canals. Now you are at leisure. Why not cruise to Burano Island for a delicious seafood meal? (BB)

DAY 13 – WED – VENICE – FLORENCE
Cross the fertile valley of the river Po before heading into the Apennines to the Tuscan capital, Florence. A guided tour takes you to the original ‘Statue of David’ inside the Academy Gallery. Walk to the Cathedral to see Giotto’s Belltower and the ‘Gates of Paradise’ before continuing to Signoria Square, adorned with statues and fountains, before visiting the basilica of Santa Croce, where Michelangelo lies buried. Finally, watch a leatherwork demonstration before enjoying some time at leisure.

DAY 14 – THU – FLORENCE AT LEISURE
A whole day is set aside to explore this glorious city, the treasure house of the Italian Renaissance. Take an excursion to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa or indulge in a delicious local meal with rich Chianti wine. (BB)

DAY 15 – FRI – FLORENCE – ROME
Travel through the Chianti vineyards and olive groves to Siena, Renaissance rival of Florence. Walk through the narrow cobbled streets to the vast Campo Square, where the Palio horse race takes place. See the Town Hall, Della Quercia's ‘Fountain of Joy’, and climb up to the hilltop Cathedral before returning to Rome for a last night celebration Highlight Dinner with pasta and music.

DAY 16 – SAT – RETURN TO USA

DAY 1 – FRI – DEPART USA
Overnight flight to Rome.

DAY 2 – SAT – ROME AT LEISURE
Welcome to Rome! On arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport, there are complimentary transfers to the tour hotel. Then there is time to relax and begin to enjoy La Dolce Vita (the sweet life). Later, join your Tour Director and fellow passengers for a Welcome Drink.

DAY 3 – SUN – ROME – SORRENTO
Visit the formidable Abbey of Monte Cassino, carefully rebuilt after the epic battle of 1944, and still dominating the surrounding countryside from its mountain top setting. Stop at the nearby Commonwealth War Cemetery before continuing on to Pompeii. Here a local guide will walk you through the streets of this Roman resort buried by an eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. A cliff-top drive leads to Sorrento.

DAY 4 – MON – AMALFI COASTAL DRIVE
There are plenty of photo opportunities as you travel along Italy’s finest coastline, the Amalfi Coast. Stop for a bird’s-eye view of the terraced houses of Positano before boarding minibuses to explore the heart of the town. There’s time to be tempted by the boutiques before heading back to Sorrento. Consider dining at one of Sorrento’s top restaurants. (BB)

DAY 5 – TUE – ISLE OF CAPRI EXCURSION
For 2,000 years, Capri has beckoned visitors from Tiberius Caesar to Gracie Fields. Arriving at the Marina Grande by boat, ascend to Capri Town by funicular railway. There is time to browse in the elegant shops and enjoy the fabulous views. You can also join an optional excursion to Anacapri before returning to Sorrento. (BB)

DAY 6 – WED – SORRENTO – ORVIETO
Travel north to the celebrated wine town of Frascati and continue to Castel Gandolfo to see the Pope’s summer residence. Then to the hilltop town of Orvieto where an orientation tour shows you the Cathedral with its richly decorated façade.

DAY 7 – THU – ORVIETO – ASSISI – PERUGIA
After crossing the River Tiber, arrive at St Mary of the Angels Basilica, erected where St Francis died, before continuing on to hill-top Assisi to visit the Basilica. Stroll down the Via San Francesco to St Clare’s church, then see the Cathedral with its baptismal font where St Francis was christened. Take time to explore or shop before continuing on to the lovely city of Perugia for two nights.

DAY 8 – FRI – PERUGIA SIGHTSEEING
This morning a walking tour introduces you to the Exchange Building, Priors’ Palace, Great Fountain and Cathedral. Later there is time at leisure in this beautiful, historic town. (BB)

DAY 9 – SAT – PERUGIA – VENICE
Travel through the Apennine Mountains to the city of Ravenna, the meeting point of Roman, Christian and Byzantine cultures. Visit the church of St Apollinaris in Classe to see the dazzling mosaics, before continuing along the Adriatic coastal plain to your hotel on the renowned Venice Lido.

DAY 10 – SUN – VENICE AT LEISURE
Cruise by private launch to St Mark’s basin to see the Bridge of Sighs connected to the Doges’ Palace. Stroll to St Mark’s Square to admire the Byzantine Basilica, before watching a glass-blowing demonstration. Enjoy a Highlight gondola ride through the canals. The rest of the day is at leisure in this remarkable city. (BB)

DAY 11 – MON – VENICE – FLORENCE
Journey to Florence, cradle of the Renaissance. On a walking tour, see the marble clad Cathedral, belltower and the Gates of Paradise on the Baptistery before continuing to Signoria Square. Visit the Basilica of Santa Croce to see Michelangelo’s tomb and finish with a Florentine leatherwork demonstration.

DAY 12 – TUE – FLORENCE SIGHTSEEING
With a local guide, admire some of Michelangelo’s work in the Academy Gallery, including his original statue of David and the half-completed Four Slaves. Afterwards, relax, shop or continue sightseeing. (BB)

DAY 13 – WED – FLORENCE – CHIANCIANO TERME
A delightful drive leads to San Gimignano. Admire the Salucci Towers, Chigi Towers and Cathedral before continuing to Siena. Stroll through the cobbled streets with a local guide to the Campo Square to see the ‘Fonte Gaia’, then continue to the zebra-striped cathedral. Follow the Tuscan country roads to the spa town of Chianciano Terme.

DAY 14 – THU – MONTEPULCIANO EXCURSION
Visit beautiful Montepulciano, one of Tuscany’s highest hill towns, its fortifications offering broad views over Umbria and Southern Tuscany. (BB,D)

Visit Tarquinia’s Archeological Museum and view the Etruscan tombs on the return journey to Rome. The rest of the day is at leisure.

With your guide, visit the vast collection of art in the Vatican Museums and the exquisite Sistine Chapel. Next door, tour St Peter’s Basilica, seeing Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Pieta. On the opposite side of the Tiber explore ancient Rome as you visit the Colosseum and see the Forum. There is time in the afternoon to relax or explore.
