As the name implies, this 10-day vacation is a sample of some of the major highlights of Europe. Start with two nights in London where sightseeing with a Local Guide includes a visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral and time to watch the Changing of the Guard (if held). Board the Eurostar train to Brussels; then begin a comfortable drive to Amsterdam where a welcome drink and sightseeing by way of a leisurely canal cruise await you. Drive through Germany’s Rhineland and Black Forest, and stop to visit the famous cathedral in Cologne and to take pictures of Heidelberg Castle. Of course a cruise on the romantic Rhine River is included. In Switzerland spend two nights in charming lakeside Lucerne to relax and enjoy the Alpine scenery before driving through the Burgundy wine area to Paris where sightseeing with a Local Guide includes all the highlights of Paris and a ride up to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower.

Itinerary

Day 1:
(Thu.) Board your overnight transatlantic flight.

Day 2:
Arrival in London, England. (Fri.) Uniformed Globus Hosts are available to help you make the most of your stay.

Day 3:
London. (Sat.) Sightseeing with a Local Guide includes all the famous landmarks: Knightsbridge with Harrods, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben beside the River Thames, Westminster Abbey, Whitehall’s mounted horseguards and the Prime Minister’s Downing Street, and Buckingham Palace. Highlights are a visit to ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL and the ceremonial pageantry of the Changing of the Guard, if held. Optional excursions are available to the Tower of London or to Windsor Castle. (FB)

Day 4:
London–Brussels, Belgium–Amsterdam, Holland. (Sun.) Meet your Tour Director and traveling companions and head for the railway station to board the EUROSTAR TRAIN to Brussels, Belgium. From here a comfortable drive will bring you to Amsterdam, Holland’s 700-year-old capital. Enjoy an included CANAL CRUISE aboard a glass-roofed launch, which is the best way to get a good impression of how this city was built and how much still remains from the Golden Age. You may want to join an optional Dutch dinner with local specialties. (FB)

Day 5:
Amsterdam–Heidelberg, Germany. (Mon.) This morning drive past the Dutch region best known as the locale of A Bridge Too Far near Arnhem to Germany. In Cologne visit the awesome twinspired gothic CATHEDRAL, and then the afternoon’s highlight: a romantic RHINE CRUISE. Continue to Heidelberg and take pictures of the famous red-walled ruins of Heidelberg Castle. (BB,D)

Day 6:
Heidelberg–Lucerne, Switzerland. (Tue.) A scenic drive through the lush valleys and pine-clad hills of the BLACK FOREST, renowned for its cuckoo clocks. On the Swiss border stop at the thundering RHINE FALLS, then continue to picture-book Lucerne. Why not sign up for a folklore party with yodeling and alphorn blowing for a first-hand impression of Alpine merrymaking? (BB)

Day 7:
Lucerne. (Wed.) Admire Thorwaldsen’s LION MONUMENT and the ornate patrician houses lining the cobbled streets of the walled Old Town, then cross the famous covered CHAPEL BRIDGE to the Jesuit Church. Balance of the day is at leisure to shop for Swiss watches and choose from our optional activities: climb a mountain by cable car or take a cruise on the fjord-like lake. (BB,D)

Lucerne–Paris, France. (Thu.) Cross the Swiss border into France and enjoy a comfortable drive through the Burgundy wine area and past Fontainebleau Forest to Paris. (BB)

Day 9:
Paris. (Fri.) Discover the world capital of chic and style with a Local Guide and admire its most famous sights: the Opéra, Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Elysées, Notre Dame Cathedral, and more. For a bird’s-eye view take the elevator to the second floor of Paris’ most famous landmark, the EIFFEL TOWER. An optional excursion to the lavish baroque Palace of Versailles is available. Arrival in Rome, Italy. Time to rest or start exploring the Eternal City. At 6 p.m. meet your Tour Director and traveling companions and leave the hotel for a special welcome dinner with wine at one of Rome’s lively restaurants. (D)

Day 3:
Rome. Sightseeing with your Local Guide starts with a visit to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and SISTINE CHAPEL, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgement. Continue to monumental ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA. Cross the Tiber and visit the COLOSSEUM and the ROMAN FORUM, where Roman Legions marched in triumph. Then time for independent activities and exciting optional excursion possibilities. (BB)

Day 4:
Rome–Florence. An easy morning drive north to Florence, cradle of the Renaissance. Follow your Local Guide to visit the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS with Michelangelo’s celebrated David, the magnificent CATHEDRAL, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistry’s heavy bronze “Gate of Paradise,” and sculpture-studded SIGNORIA SQUARE. Florence–Venice. Drive across the Apennine Hills and through the plains of the mighty River Po to Venice. Enter the city in style by PRIVATE BOAT to ST. MARK’S SQUARE. Itinerary

Day 1:
(Sun.) Board your overnight transatlantic flight.

Day 2:
Arrival in Rome, Italy. (Mon.) Time to rest or start exploring the Eternal City. At 6 p.m. meet your Tour Director and traveling companions and leave the hotel for a special welcome dinner with wine at one of Rome’s lively restaurants. (D)

Day 3:
Rome. (Tue.) Sightseeing with your Local Guide starts with a visit to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and SISTINE CHAPEL, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgement. Continue to monumental ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA. Cross the Tiber and visit the COLOSSEUM and the ROMAN FORUM, where Roman Legions marched in triumph. Then time for independent activities and exciting optional excursion possibilities. (BB)

Day 4:
Rome–Assisi–Venice. (Wed.) Morning break in peaceful Assisi. Visit the massive 13th-century BASILICA OF ST. FRANCIS built above the saint’s grave. A kaleidoscope of Italian landscapes parades past the coach windows on the way to the Adriatic coast and across the Po Delta to Venice. Why not join an optional dinner Venetian-style tonight? (BB)

Day 5:
Venice. (Thu.) Start morning sightseeing in style by PRIVATE BOAT to meet your Local Guide. Highlights of your walking tour are ST. MARK’S SQUARE and the Byzantine BASILICA, lavish DOGES’ PALACE and the BRIDGE OF SIGHS. Also watch skilled GLASSBLOWERS fashion their delicate objects in an age-old traditional manner. Then enjoy Venice at your own pace or join an optional cruise to Burano Island. (BB)

Day 6:
Venice–Ferrara–Florence. (Fri.) First stop this morning is Ferrara. Stroll past the imposing Este Castle and visit the marble CATHEDRAL before continuing through the wooded Apennine Mountains into Tuscany to Florence, cradle of the Renaissance. Time to wander at whim or to check out the enticing shops with Florentine leather goods and gold jewelry. You may want to join one of the exciting evening optionals. (BB)

Day 7:
Florence. (Sat.) Follow your Local Guide to visit the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS with Michelangelo''s celebrated David, the magnificent CATHEDRAL, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistry’s heavy bronze “Gate of Paradise,” and the sculpture-studded SIGNORIA SQUARE. Afternoon at leisure. (BB,D)

Day 8:
Florence–Pisa–Nice, France. (Sun.) Focus on Pisa this morning for pictures of its amazing Leaning Tower, 180 feet high and 12 feet out of the perpendicular. Then a scenic drive past a string of Italian and French Riviera resorts towards the Principality of Monaco. Here leave the highway for the panoramic Moyenne Corniche. Before arriving in Nice, visit one of the PERFUME FACTORIES for which the area is famous. (BB)

Day 9:
Nice. Excursion to St. Paul de Vence. (Mon.) This morning enjoy an included visit to the picturesque hilltop town of St. Paul de Vence. Then a lazy afternoon to dabble in the blue Mediterranean or stroll along the elegant Promenade des Anglais. An optional outing is available tonight to Monte Carlo. (BB)

Day 10:
Nice–Paris. (Tue.) Transfer to the railway station and board the high-speed “TGV” TRAIN to Paris. You may wish to try out one of Paris’ fine restaurants and to explore the City of Light! (BB)

Day 11:
Paris. (Wed.) Discover the world capital of chic and style with a Local Guide and admire its most famous sights: the Opéra, Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Elysées, Notre Dame Cathedral, and more. For a bird’s-eye view take the elevator to the second floor of Paris’ most famous landmark, the EIFFEL TOWER. An optional excursion to the lavish baroque Palace of Versailles is available. Tonight a lively cabaret show might just be the ticket. (BB)
