| Once sought after by pirates for its safe harbors, the Los Cabos ("the
Capes") region of Southern Baja Peninsula is now home to the bustling towns of San
Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Each offers travelers a rich and fun-filled destination.
San Jose del Cabo is a fine place to
unwind. Of the two Cabos, San Jose is the more sedate, but offers horse racing across the
sandy beaches, golf, shopping and an authentic Mexican flavor.
Cabo San Lucas is the faster-growing of the
two, with a population of 25,000. In the past few years, Cabo San Lucas has added swanky
new hotels and sleek condos to round out this vacation destination. Superb sport
fishing put Cabo San Lucas on the map, but non-fishermen will enjoy the thriving beach
community. Snorkeling gear, boats, waverunners, kayaks, paddleboats and windsurf boards
are all available for the active beachcomber.
Golf is big news here in southern Baja. In
Cabo you can try your skills on nearly 100 hotels rated for championship play. A
spectacular landscape of desert, mountains and sea forms the ideal backdrop for some of
the best
and most impressively designed golf courses in the continent.
Hotel location
Most hotel are superior,
deluxe and first class hotels. The most important thing is to make sure the hotel you are
staying at is where you want to
be located. Some hotels are up to 20 miles away from
Downtown. If you planned your vacation around the excitement and nightlife in Cabo,
be sure your hotel is located in or near Cabo. If you planned your vacation to enjoy
some golf and quiet time spent around a pool and a more low keyed nightlife
in San Jose
del Cabo, then make sure that the hotel location is in a more secluded area. There are
also a number of fine hotels along the Corridor that allow a relatively close distance to
both Towns.
Day time fun...
There are endless activities to
experience in Los Cabos, from the world's
best Sport fishing to fine dining and shopping.
Here are a list of things
you can do while in Los Cabos:
The Sport Fishing is second to none (Cabo
is the Sports Fishing Capital of
the World). To battle a 500lbs marlin for hours is a
thrill of a life time, and
then to release your catch for another angler to catch some
other day is
a very satisfying feeling.
Grey Whales migrate by Los Cabos for
about 4 months every year. To see
one of these massive animals up close is a truly an
experience you'll never
forget. The best time to see these huge creatures is from about
mid
November to mid March.
The coast line from Cabo to San Jose
boasts some of the best snorkeling anywhere. Santa Maria Bay is a great spot for
snorkeling along with Chilano Reef. There are a number of SCUBA dive shops in Los
Cabos and all are qualified to take you on your undersea adventure. The Sand falls
at land's End are a must see for the diving enthusiast.
There are many other water activities to
enjoy from wave runner rentals, sailing rentals, water taxi and glass bottom boat tours,
parasailing, surfing
and wind surfing. Parasailing is growing in popularity. You can also enjoy
a mid morning cruise on one of the snorkeling / party cruises offered.
For a cost of between $30 and $50 you can spend about 3 1/2 hours aboard a
boat with 20 or
30 others and enjoy the scenery along the coast line and snorkel at one of the many stops,
lunch and drinks are almost always
included on these cruises.
For the land lovers, the beach is the
place everybody that comes to Los Cabos spends at least a little time visiting. If
you want to spend your day lounging in the sun and getting a little happy hour type action
while doing
it, there are a number of beach side bars and restaurants on the main
resort
beach to keep you entertained the entire day with Places like
Billygans, The Office,
The Sand Bar and Las Palmas.
Golf is big news here in southern Baja. In Cabo you can
try your skills on nearly 100 hotels rated for championship play. A spectacular landscape
of desert, mountains and sea forms the ideal backdrop for some of the best
and most
impressively designed golf courses in the continent.
A few of the larger hotels provide horse
back tours of the older trails off
the beach. There is one other place you have to take
the time to see...
There aren't any "organized" tours to go there, but if you ask
a local, rent
a jeep, there is Los Cascadas (The Waterfalls). This area is well off the
main roads and is found west of the airport. The tropical setting is
some
thing you
would not expect to find in Baja. A series of waterfalls and a
forest of trees with
tropical birds flying everywhere is breath taking. Take
a picnic basket and enjoy the
surroundings!
The Down town area has many shops, and
activities...if a authentic Bull
fight is something you want to see, every week one takes
place at the
east end of town. Most all the restaurants have a day time happy hour
and
great food. If souvenirs are a must to take home, there are hundreds
of shops and market
areas to buy these. We suggest you shop around for
the best deal and barter with the sales
person as they appreciate a person
that can make a deal as well as the next. There is also
a sports bar in town
for the track enthusiast, where you can bet on horses, dogs, and just
about any other sporting event, sit back watch one of 24 TV's all with live satellite
feeds and enjoy.
Food
There are more than 400
restaurants in Los Cabos, and finding a good meal
is easy! There are a number of
must do 5 star Restaurants such as Da
Giorgio's out at the point across from Land's End
the view itself makes the
meal great and the food is first class. Another must do Classy
Restaurant is
Casa Rafael's near the main beach in Cabo, the piano bar, the world class
food and the 2,400 gallon full view salt water fish tank placed in the middle
of the
dining area is a perfect setting for a romantic dinner. If a more casual
setting is your
style then Cabo is full of restaurants to meet your needs.
Some great locations are the
Baja Cantina which also has one of the best
happy hours in town from 2pm to 7pm (great specials such as 10 peso
drinks) For those that need that American fast food taste, most of the major
franchises have come to Cabo and you can get your fill of these as well.
Nightlife and
Happy Hours
Downtown Cabo is known for
the nightlife - it is second to none !
If an early start is your plan, at the southwest end of town you can find one of the best
happy hours (or should we say 5 hours). Starting at 2:00pm the Baja Cantina comes alive
and is a favorite of many tourist and locals alike, from there you have a choice of 100's
of restaurants, nightclubs, and bars
to keep you busy the entire night! |
