EMPEROR PENGUINS: Snow Hill Island
Safari
14 day expedition
Ushuaia to Ushuaia

|
Multiple
visits over a number of days to the Snow Hill Island
rookery offer unique photo opportunities. Digital
photography workshops help you take outstanding
photographs while among the penguins. Scenic hikes
cross sea ice dotted with icebergs frozen in place
are akin to walking through a sculpture garden.
Onboard helicopters are used for transfers and
sightseeing. A polar-class icebreaker and more than
15 years of expedition operations make this voyage
possible. You'll sail about 1800 nautical from
Ushuaia to Ushuaia. The third voyage ends in
Stanley, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas),
therefore the distance traveled will be different.
Day 1
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
The city's international airport is served by
flights from Buenos Aires and Chile. We recommend
that you arrive as early in the day as possible. The
"city at the end of the world" offers outdoor soft
adventure activities, great restaurants, and
museums. Overnight in Ushuaia.
Day 2
Embarkation Day
Your luggage will be transferred from your
included hotel to the ship today. Embarkation occurs
in the late afternoon. You are free to explore
Ushuaia until embarkation.
Day 3
At Sea
Crossing the Drake Passage is as much a part of
the Antarctic experience as penguins and krill. With
the right weather conditions the transit will be
relatively easy, but pack your seasickness medicine
just in case the Drake lives up to its reputation.
Day 4-5
Through Bransfield Strait to the Weddell Sea
In anticipation of the first landing at the
rookery while sailing you learn how to enter and
exit Zodiacs and helicopters. The addition of
helicopters for ice reconnaissance, aerial
sightsseing and shore transfers is one reason that
an icebeaker expedition delivers the ultimate
Antarctic experience.
Day 6-8
Snow Hill Island Rookery
Adventurers returning from our 2007 safaris
raved about the expedition, observing that the
environment was as fascinating as the birds. The
Emperors raised their young on sea ice that had
captured icebergs, freezing them in place like huge
sculptures dropped at random into the landscape. It
is our intention during the 2008 expeditions to
spend 3 or 4 days in the vicinity of the rookery.
Our itinerary may have to be modified in response to
changing weather and ice conditions in the Weddell
Sea.
Day 9-11
The Antarctic Peninsula
If the visit to the rookery occurs as planned we
intend to spend a few days exploring the Antarctic
Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. The
Expedition Team will be planning visits to the
rookeries of Gentoo or Adelie Penguins, where
courtship behavior will be underway. The contrast
will be startling after your experience at the Snow
Hill rookery.
Day 12-13
The Drake Passage or Scotia Sea
A day at sea can be as busy as any day ashore.
The day speeds by when you bird watch from the deck,
attend presentations, or just idly watch the waves
from the fly deck. The 360 view from the top of the
ship is perfect for taking panoramic photos.
Day 14
Disembarkation Day
After breakfast aboard, you will be transferred
in a group to the passenger collection point in
Ushuaia.

On
this exciting expedition, we have the opportunity to
thoroughly explore the South Shetland region and
Antarctic Peninsula searching out breathtaking bays
and islands, and marveling at extraordinary natural
wonders. We’ll also hope to travel further into the
polar regions than on any other Peregrine
expedition, journeying as far as the Antarctic
Circle at 66* 33’ south.
Aboard our well-appointed Peregrine expedition
vessel, we see Antarctic nature in all its glory.
The offshore South Shetland group boasts an
abundance of wildlife, including five seal species
and massive penguin rookeries of gentoo, Adelies and
chinstraps as well as a profusion of seabirds from
albatross to skuas. A wildlife highlight may well be
watching a variety of magnificent whale species in
close proximity as they crest the surface of the
waves.
On the Peninsula, we expect to visit Paradise
Harbour, dotted with spectacular icebergs, beautiful
Hope Bay, and if ice conditions permit, the superb
Lemaire Channel, with its glacial walls rising high
on both sides. We’ll be stunned by the mainland
itself made up of a remarkable sweeping ice-sheet
that masks mountains and fills trenches, binding
together an entire continent that is close in size
to Africa. One can only marvel at the resolve of the
early explorers in their quest to conquer this
inhospitable land.
Now we are the explorers and it’s our chance to
undertake a range of exciting activities amidst some
of the most dramatic scenery to be found on earth
from zodiac cruises and sea kayaking to wildlife
watching and hiking. If conditions are suitable, we
may even have the chance to camp ashore on the
expanse of continental ice. (It has become a
hallmark of Peregrine’s Antarctic program to offer a
range of options catering to various interests.
We’ll break into small groups for zodiac cruising
excursions, wildlife watching, sea kayaking, as well
as extensive hikes on shore.) Or you may simply wish
sit for hours onshore near a penguin rookery,
contemplating the remarkable commotion all around.
The choice is yours.
Note: Weather, ice, or other conditions may
necessitate changes to our itinerary and alteration
to certain shore excursions.

Day
1: Ushuaia
We board our Peregrine expedition vessel in Ushuaia
on Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of South
America. Setting sail in the early evening, we
travel through the Beagle Channel. The long days
mean we’ll have plenty of evening light to take in
the beauty of the channel and the wildlife in the
area.
Meals included: 1 dinner
Days 2 - 3: Drake Passage
We cross the Drake Passage with our team of experts
stationed on deck to help us spot whales and
identify seabirds. We’ll also have the chance to
take part in the onboard presentation series
preparing us for our adventures on the “White
Continent”. Talks on wildlife, ice and polar history
create enormous anticipation that builds as we cross
the Antarctic Convergence. Here the cold waters of
the Antarctic Ocean meet the warmer waters of the
Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. We’ll notice a sharp
drop in temperature at this point. Huge icebergs
loom against the horizon and seabirds such as the
wandering albatross and petrels are regularly in
view.
Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunchs, 2 dinners
Days 4 - 11: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic
Our itinerary for these days is necessarily flexible
and is dependent on ice and weather conditions. Our
route will be decided by our expedition leader in
consultation with the ship’s captain. We may start
by sailing as far south as possible, hopefully to
the Antarctic Circle, and then working our way back
north along the peninsula and finally visiting the
off-shore South Shetland Islands group. Otherwise,
this order may be reversed meaning we first cruise
among the volcanic South Shetland Islands before
travelling to the waterways of the Antarctic
Peninsula. Whatever the case, we’ll make our first
landing on day 3 or day 4. The itinerary focuses on
the areas with the greatest promise of wildlife.
We cruise among the South Shetland islands and the
waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula, travelling
ashore as frequently as possible in inflatable
zodiac boats. We’ll hope to make shore excursions to
Livingston, Half Moon and King George Islands.
Admiralty Bay, on King George Island, is a favoured
feeding ground for humpback whales and, with luck,
we may see them dining on krill.
At crescent-shaped Half Moon Island, we’ll observe a
breeding colony of chinstrap penguins that share
their territory with fur seals and blue-eyed shags
while at Livingston Island, we’ll discover more
flourishing wildlife. Here there are Weddell and
elephant seals, skuas, giant petrels, Antarctic
terns and rookeries of chinstrap, gentoo and
macaroni penguins.
Weather permitting, we’ll also hope to enter the
flooded volcanic caldera of Deception Island, a
recently active volcano and one of the most perfect
crater islands in the world. Steam rises in places
along its shores where the cold Antarctic waters mix
with the thermal waters of the bay. Here, the very
adventurous may choose to take a dip, if conditions
are suitable. We may also observe the island's large
chinstrap penguin colony and enjoy spectacular walks
to the higher points on the crater rim.
We then head further south, to Paradise Harbour or
Hope Bay, both situated on the Antarctic mainland.
Here we’ll be stunned by some of the most dramatic
scenery the continent has to offer – a photographers
paradise. Ringed with overhanging ice cliffs, the
bay is filled with a remarkable assortment of
floating icebergs that reflect a stunning array of
colours, including the most exquisite blues,
turquoises and indigos.
If conditions are favourable, we’ll have an
opportunity to spend a night ashore, camping out on
the ice, if you wish. This is an unforgettable
experience with the lights of the southern sky
bathing the landscape in an eerie luminescence.
On one or two occasions we may attempt to go ashore
to visit some of the research stations maintained by
various countries. On board while we cruise between
landing points, we’ll want to spend time on the
bridge or on deck just marvelling at the glory of
the passing scenery, particularly through the
Lemaire Channel. Penguins are often seen
“porpoising” in the water, or resting on ice flows
in this area. As well, we’ll have the chance to bask
in a magnificent twilight that precedes the short
nights that last only a couple of hours.
South of the Lemaire Channel, we’ll hope to find
clear conditions that will allow us to travel right
down to the Antarctic Circle. Here too the scenery
is extraordinary, and it’s particularly exciting to
realize we’ve crossed the line into this remote
stretch of southern sea. It’s a great feeling.
It will likely be with some sadness that we
eventually turn the ship back heading north for the
final leg of this remarkable journey.
Meals included: 8 breakfasts, 8 lunchs, 8 dinners
Days 12 - 13: Drake Passage
Leaving the Antarctic Peninsula (or the South
Shetlands depending on our chosen route), we head
back across the Antarctic Convergence and the Drake
Passage. The crossing is completed with the rounding
of Cape Horn. We celebrate the conclusion of our
adventure and last evening together on board, at the
Captain’s Dinner as we make our way down the Beagle
Channel.
Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunchs, 2 dinners
Day 14: Ushuaia
In the early morning, we arrive back in Ushuaia
where our cruise ends. You are transferred to your
hotel, or to the airport for your onward flight.
Meals included: 1 breakfast

Peregrine Mariner

he ‘Peregrine Mariner’
is a relatively new, well equipped, ice-rated ship
that is state of the art in terms of stability,
speed, and comfort amongst expedition ships. She can
carry up to 110 passengers and is kept in top
condition. While this is every bit an expedition
product, this ship is ideal if you want that extra
stability and comfort.
The large cabins all
have an outside view, with portholes or a window,
and are comfortably furnished. Most of them have
private or semi-private facilities. On-board
facilities include a spacious top deck, where you
can enjoy spectacular views, and a refreshing sauna
- a great place to relax after your shore
excursions. There is also a well-stocked library, a
comfortable lounge and a friendly bar. Other
facilities include a gift shop and laundry. |

Minerva
(Formerly Explorer ll)

Explorer II' brings a rare touch of comfortable, informal
refinement to Antarctic travel. Launched in 1996, she has been
likened to a country-house hotel, a comparison confirmed by her
fresh flowers, gleaming brass, polished wood and works of
original art.
But there's strong steel beneath
the graceful exterior. 'Explorer II' is well equipped to handle
the open-water cruising and icy channels of Antarctic seas. Her
speed, ice-strengthened hull, stabilizers and bow thrusters give
her the power, stability and agility necessary to ensure a safe,
smooth passage for all on board. Without sacrificing an iota of
strength, 'Explorer II' sets new standards of style in
expeditionary cruising.
Designed
For Your Comfort. 'Explorer II' is a ship in a class of its
own: elegant, yet unpretentious; stylish, yet stalwart. The
delightful Lounge is a passenger favorite, a place to compare
notes before the day's Zodiac excursion, listen to a lively talk
by an on-board naturalist, or join friends for after-dinner
coffee. Two open bars-the Shackleton and the South Cape- provide
additional corners in which to relax.
An exceptional Library offers a wide range of titles, fact or
fiction, as well as newspapers, games and puzzles. There's an
Exercise Room for the dedicated fitness enthusiast, and a Gift
Shop for remembrances of your expedition.
Spacious
Accommodations. 'Explorer II' boasts uncommonly elegant
guest quarters that are among the most spacious and comfortable
in Antarctica. After days of invigorating exploration on the
White Continent, your warm, welcoming cabin-many offer private
balconies-will offer ample room to stretch out and relax,
reflecting on the day's adventures.
Warm, Personal Service. To ensure the highest quality of
service, 'Explorer II' carries a staff and crew of 146 to
accommodate just 198 passengers. Laundry service is
available on board.
International
Cuisine. Dining on board is a sophisticated pleasure.
'Explorer II' offers two dining rooms, both with simultaneous
open seatings. In the main Dining Room or the casual Bridge
Café, you'll be seated where and with whom you please, ready to
enjoy a leisurely meal selected from imaginative, international
menus with a gourmet touch. There is always a selection of light
fare and vegetarian dishes, and special diets can be
accommodated with sufficient advance notice.
Cheers! All bar drinks and house wines on board are
included in your fare cost.
24-Hour Open Bridge. If you've ever wondered what gets
entered into a ship's log, or whether mariners still use a
sextant, just visit the Bridge and ask the officer on duty.
Aboard 'Explorer II,' the Bridge is open to passengers all day,
every day, for a fascinating glimpse of the art and craft of
blue-water navigation.
Attire. While you'll want to change out of your day
clothes for dinner, you won't need a wardrobe any dressier than
"smart casual" wear.

Amenities. A day at sea can be as busy, or as relaxing,
as you wish. Enjoy a guide's presentation in the lounge or
auditorium. View the awe-inspiring scenery from the ship's
Promenade deck, where you can circumnavigate the ship on an easy
walk or jog. Undertake an invigorating workout in the gymnasium.
Unwind in the sauna. Enjoy a massage in the ship's full-service
beauty salon. Or browse the onboard shops and take in a movie in
the cinema. With so many options, you can set your own pace
aboard 'Explorer II.'
Zodiac
Exploration. Zodiacs are the workhorses of any well-planned
Antarctica adventure, and 'Explorer II' carries a large fleet of
these fast, safe, stable rubber rafts. Easy to launch and to
land, Zodiacs make it possible for passengers to explore remote
Antarctic shores where there are no piers or other formal
docking arrangements.
They also function as exploratory vessels, specializing in "up
front and personal" encounters. You'll never forget your first
Zodiac circumnavigation of a 100-foot-high, aquamarine-tinted
iceberg, followed by the placid gazes of the dozen sleek seals
camped out on its slopes.
A&K Chile. Abercrombie & Kent is the first international
tour operator to set up fully fledged local offices in South
America. Our on-site presence in Santiago, Chile, provides
support and reassurance for our travellers in South America as
only a local staff can. In addition, A&K Chile offers a full
