The
Weddell Sea has become synonymous with the torturous
northerly drift of Shackleton's Endurance
expedition. Travel where few are able, on a truly
exploratory voyage of sunsets and ice sculptures. A
spectacular way to spend Christmas or to see in the
New Year!
We break
new ground whenever we travel on this easterly route
as the ice here is notoriously unpredictable. This
trip is built for the adventure seeker who wants to
explore
From
Ushuaia, the southernmost city in South America, we
set sail for the volcanic South Shetland Islands,
where we'll make several landings each day - with
location and frequency dependent upon weather and
ice conditions. Our first landing may be on
Deception Island, site of a large chinstrap penguin
colony. Deception is a mountainous and volcanically
active island where steam rises from the black sand
beaches.
Weather
permitting, our next stop will be Esperanza Base,
Argentina's scientific research station. There's a
large Adelie penguin colony in the area nad, by this
time of the year, many will be tending to newborn
chicks. Next we'll see how far the sea-ice will let
us push thought the begs into the heavily-iced
Weddell Sea.
James
Ross Island boasdts two volcanic mountains named
Erebus and Terror, after the ships in Ross'
expeditions. From here we travel back to the north
and visit Paulet Island, site of one of the largest
Adelie penguin colonies. Then we'll attempt a
landing on Elephant Island, where the Endurance
sailors took refuge while shackleton went to seek
refuge.

Peregrine Mariner

The ‘Peregrine
Mariner’ is a relatively new, well equipped,
ice-rated ship that is state of the art in terms
of stability, speed, and comfort amongst
expedition ships. She can carry up to 110
passengers and is kept in top condition. While
this is every bit an expedition product, this
ship is ideal if you want that extra stability
and comfort.
The large cabins all
have an outside view, with portholes or a
window, and are comfortably furnished. Most of
them have private or semi-private facilities.
On-board facilities include a spacious top deck,
where you can enjoy spectacular views, and a
refreshing sauna - a great place to relax after
your shore excursions. There is also a
well-stocked library, a comfortable lounge and a
friendly bar. Other facilities include a gift
shop and laundry.

Actual cabin layout may not be exactly as shown.

CLASSIC ANTARCTICA
Discovery the
Peninsula
11 & 12 day Voyages
Ushuaia to Ushuaia

|
This
itinerary is delivered at a comfortable pace. Shore
landings will be in the Peninsula. There is an
in-depth education program, with an
artist-in-residence on selected voyages. You'll sail
about 1700 nautical miles from Ushuaia to Ushuaia.
Some departures may be operated in the reverse
direction.
Day 1
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
Getting to this frontier town is easy, because the
local airport is served by flights from Buenos
Aires, Argentina and Santiago, Chile. We've included
a night at one of the city's good hotels, to ensure
you don't miss a moment of the expedition.
Day 2
Embarkation Day
The included coach tour (2008 only) of the
nearby National Park includes a stroll along a
boardwalk, and a stop for lunch. Asado is
Argentina's traditional method of preparing lamb,
beef and chicken. The meat is grilled over an open
fire and served with chimichurri - a piquant sauce
made from parsley and other herbs. Hunger satisfied,
we transfer you to the ship for embarkation.
Day 3-4
The Drake Passage
Become familiar with the ship on this your first
full day at sea. Members of the Expedition Team keep
you company on deck, identifying seabirds that glide
along side of the ship for miles at a time.
Day 5-8
Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands
Shore landings are announced the night before in the
daily program delivered to your cabin. Your
exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula may include
visits to penguin rookeries, research stations and
encounters
Although each voyage is painstakingly planned, it is
impossible to provide prior to departure a
definitive summary of the journey you'll experience.
The Expedition Leader in cooperation with the ship's
Captain adjusts the route as the expedition unfolds
to take advantage of the best weather and ice
conditions. For this reason, no itinerary is the
same.
Day 9-10
The Drake Passage
The Expedition Team enriches the voyage with formal
presentations that are chosen specifically in
response to the sightings and activities that you
experienced. If you have sighted orcas, then you can
expect a presentation on their life cycle. If you
were one of the lucky few to see a Southern Right
Whale during your expedition then you will learn
about that species. That is one reason that every
Classic Antarctic expedition is unique.
Day 11
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
Exchange photographs and e-mail addresses with your
new found friends, before being transferred to the
airport for your flight home.

ANTARCTIC ADVENTURE
Actively Exploring the Peninsula
12 day
expedition
Ushuaia to Ushuaia

|
This
expedition is for people who enjoy active
adventures. Every sailing offers an average of three
shore landings per day while in the Antarctic
Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. The education
program covers a wide range of topics from
identifying seabirds to the future of Antarctica.
Optional adventures - camping, kayaking,
mountaineering and cross-country skiing - are
available on selected departures. You'll sail about
1800 nautical miles from Ushuaia to Ushuaia. Some
departures may be operated in the opposite
direction.
Day 1
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
Your last contact with civilization, Ushuaia,
Argentina is rustic, quaint and vibrant. You will be
at the end of the world as you know it. If you
arrive early, you could hike, kayak or mountain
bike. Ushuaia is an adventurer's paradise.
Day 2
Embarkation Day
You are transferred to the port by motor coach to
board the ship in the late afternoon.
Day 3-4
Crossing the Drake Passage
Our Adventure Ships don't have elevators. Good news
for fitness buffs who want to keep fit while at sea.
You'll climb stairs to and from the dining room,
outside decks, and your cabin. In between we'll keep
you busy learning how to identify seabirds on the
wing as well as entering and exiting a Zodiac
safely. We are preparing you for the shore landings
to come.
Day 5-9
Antarctica
Adventure options - kayaking, camping,
mountaineering or cross-country skiing - should be
booked at the same as you make your expedition
reservations. If you decide that the adventure
options are not for you, your voyage will still be
exhilarating. Zodiacs will zip you ashore to hike
the steep hills of penguin rookeries. You'll
negotiate iceberg graveyards past seals floating on
ice floes. Research stations and spy bases could be
on the agenda. Every expedition is unique. Landings
and wildlife sightings are subject to weather, ice
conditions and the natural cycles of wildlife.
Day 10-12
The Drake Passage
The education program continues with subjects that
range from the Antarctic Marathon to whales of the
Southern Ocean. You can stand topside identifying
seabirds. You'll be an expert by the time you enter
the Drake for the return journey.
Day 12
Disembarkation, Ushuaia, Argentina
Breakfast will be aboard the ship. Your luggage will
be transferred to the end of the quay for storage.
Unless you have booked one of the morning flights
out of Ushuaia? Then we'll transfer you as a group
directly to the airport.

Specifically
designed for cruising through icy waters, Explorer II is
a exploration ship that can accommodate up to 300 guests. But in
Antarctica we've chosen to limit her complement to a maximum of
only 198 guests. The ship is stylish, yet unpretentious. With
her gleaming brass, polished wood and works of original art,
she's often likened to a country house hotel, and she brings a
rare touch of comfortable, informal refinement to Antarctica
travel.

Activities
Your
days at sea can be as active as you choose. When you're not out
on the Promenade Deck whale watching and glacier-gasping, you
can work out in the gym, unwind in a sauna, enjoy a massage or a
movie at the cinema. Each day you'll meet for informal pre-shore
briefings or post-excursion wrap-ups in the ship's lounge or
theater-style auditorium. Mid-morning bouillon and afternoon tea
are served daily. The gracious, wood-paneled Library with its
4,000+ volumes is one of the largest at sea.
Expedition Team
An expedition staff of respected naturalists, geologists,
zoologists, historians and ornithologists accompany each
expedition. These experts brief guests about the natural
wonders, wildlife and history of the White Continent, escort
each zodiac foray and recap the day's discoveries at informal
get-togethers.
Zodiac Cruising
Zodiacs are the workhorses of any Antarctica expedition.
Explorer II has a fleet of ten rubber motorized boats, safe and
stable rubber rafts that make it possible to explore remote
Antarctic shores and cruise through the narrow channels for a
close-up view.
The Lounge & Bars
The
Lounge is the social heart of the ship, where you can chat with
newfound friends and enjoy informal lectures. Two open bars, the
Shackleton and the South Cape, provide additional corners where
you'll probably spend a good deal of time socializing with
fellow guests and mingling with members of the expedition. The
atmosphere is informal and unregimented, with a warm sense of
camaraderie. Liquors, wines and beverages are complimentary on
board.
Other Diversions
The Bridge stays open 24-hours-a-day. There's a small fitness
room with sauna, a sundeck and pool. And there's also a gift
shop for sundries and souvenirs, a photo lab, a card room, and a
dedicated Smoking Room on the Bridge Deck.

Day 1 : Buenos Aires, Argentina
Arrive in Buenos Aires and transfer to the
Palacio DuHau–Park Hyatt for the night. The
remainder of the day is at leisure to relax
after the flight or explore Buenos Aires on your
own.
Day 2 : Buenos Aires - Ushuaia - Embarkation
Fly from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, a small
Patagonian city set on the Beagle Channel and
surrounded by the Darwin Cordillera, glaciers,
and forests of southern beech. Upon arrival,
transfer to Corinthian II. As Corinthian II
navigates the Beagle Channel, enjoy a
spectacular vista of glaciers and green-misted
mountains.
Days 3-4 : At Sea
Attend lectures by naturalists and study leaders
as Corinthian II sails through the Drake Passage
and crosses the Antarctic Convergence, where the
cold waters of the Southern Ocean override the
warmer waters to the north. Albatross and cape
petrels are among the birds that accompany the
ship on its passage.
Days 5-9 : Antarctic Peninsula
Enjoy five days exploring the pristine
wilderness of the Antarctic Peninsula and
surrounding islands. The Peninsula is a narrow
finger of land that separates the ice-choked
waters of the Weddell and Bellingshausen Seas.
As Corinthian II sails through scenic waterways,
witness a breathtaking panorama of icebergs,
blue glaciers, and jagged, snowcapped mountains.
Aboard the ship's fleet of Zodiacs, cruise among
ice floes, land at penguin rookeries, and visit
with scientists at research stations. Although
the itinerary varies according to local ice and
wind conditions, we plan to land at such places
as Petermann Island, where humpback and minke
whales are often sighted offshore; Paradise Bay,
the habitat of gentoo and chinstrap penguins and
leopard and Weddell seals; and Deception Island,
known for its volcanically heated hot springs.
Voyages through the magnificent Lemaire,
Neumayer, Errata, and other protected channels
are also scheduled-never to be forgotten.
Days 10-11 : At Sea
Enjoy on-board lectures and the amenities of the
ship as Corinthian II makes the 600-mile return
trip to Ushuaia.
