When traveling alone, we understand that some travelers do not want to incur the expense of an additional single room supplement. With this in mind, on the majority of their itineraries, Trafalgar offers you the opportunity to purchase these trips on a room-sharing basis. They will accommodate you with a fellow passenger of the same gender on a ‘two-bedded’ basis (non-smoking rooms only). Please note that, regrettably, they cannot guarantee that roommates will be of a similar age group. Even so, it is an enjoyable way to travel and get to make new friends, and a positive way to stretch your vacation budget. If Trafalgar is unable to match you with someone, they will provide a single room at no extra cost. |
|
Please note: This service does not apply to Trafalgar City Breaks, Greek Island Hopper and Best of Greece vacations, Greek itineraries with Mediterranean cruises, train tours, Egypt, Israel and extra night (pre or post,) accommodations. |

"So, not quite sure how to start a tour tale, so I’ll just jump right in. My Dad and I did our first Trafalgar tour this summer. I took my Dad on the Sound of Music tour for his 70th birthday. Our family is originally from Bregenz, Austria, so we went there after the tour. It was an awesome vacation! We flew from St. Louis to Dulles and had a five hour lay over. We flew Austrian Airlines to Vienna; uneventful flight, so that was good. I wasn’t sure we would make the transfer to the hotel, but we did. The hotel was the Hilton on the Danube. Beautiful hotel! We had a room overlooking the river. Huge room by even American standards! Not too far from the metro, either. I spent a semester in London and lived briefly in DC, so we went straight to the metro. No problem! We had the whole afternoon before our welcome drink to explore Vienna. Now, I am a fan of museums, history, art, palaces, etc. I even work for an opera company. So, I had been told by fellow travelers that I would adore Vienna; not so much! It is a nice city, but I was expecting to be blown away by the extravagance of it. I enjoyed it, but not on my “to return to” list. We went first to the Opera House for the tour. I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. Nice theater, but The Kennedy Center blows it out of the water, in my opinion. The tour guide couldn’t even answer my question about the fly systems. The people on my tour didn’t seem very interested in opera. One girl even asked the guide at the end “What is opera?”. Oy! I thought my head was going to explode. We then went to the Hotel Sacher for the Sacher torte and sat outside. Now, that lived up to expectations. We also toured the Hofburg. I was smart enough to buy the Sisi pass online before we went, which was for Schronbrunn, as well. Really good decision! We bypassed the lines. A tip: if you aren’t interested in dishes, skip the first part of the tour. I have never seen so many plates! I loved the Sisi museum as I find her fascinating. The palace was neat, but not the opulence I was expecting. If you just have time for one palace, go to Schonbrunn. Now that is breathtaking! Very like Versailles. We had a hard time making it through the tour, as it was so hot in there! They don’t have the same type of air conditioning that we are used to in the US. (My Dad said he has never smelled so many stinky armpits in one day! J) Also, (a tip that I learned quickly) get bottled water wherever you see it. It is hard to find (as are bathrooms). It is harder to find one that isn’t sparkling. On Sunday, we had our sightseeing tour. Our tour guide, Dean, was awesome, by the way, and we ended up with a great group. No drama! Our local guide for Vienna was very good. We walked around for about two hours and then it was time for a 1 ½ hour lunch break. I was like “What? We just had breakfast!” (which was very good at the hotel, best we had. Luckily we had it three times, and we got to eat on the patio overlooking the river). I have done 18-35 year old tours of the UK and Ireland, which did not have this much free time. We had time to do the Treasury, which was neat and get pastries at the café. That afternoon, we went to a monastery outside of Vienna. Very cool! It looked like a movie. This was one of my Dad’s favorite parts of the trip. Oh and we briefly stopped where Mayerling used to be. It’s not there anymore. There is a nunnery that no one is allowed in. Kind of disappointing. That night, we had our first included dinner. It was so good, it spoiled us for the rest of the trip. It was a Hungarian restaurant with goulash. Not like we get at home. It was more like short ribs with the noodles and gravy. There were musicians in traditional Hungarian dress, too. One of them got me to dance with him. The next day was our free day in Vienna with our hop-on hop-off bus passes. I have done so many of those buses in various cities. It is the best way to see everything. It was much cooler that day by 20 degrees (from 80s to 60s). We visited Schonbrunn that day (with the Sisi ticket we had already spent almost an hour in the gardens by the time people from the tour caught up to us.) I loved Schonbrunn. Now that’s what you want to see in a palace! Gold leaf on the walls, frescos on the ceilings, gorgeous furniture, and lots of paintings of the royal family (these were Maria Theresa’s 16 daughters, including Marie Antoinette). The gardens were outstanding. You could spend days seeing everything. After that, we went to the Prater. My Dad had a restaurant that he picked out the guide book that he wanted to go to. Like, the only thing he really wanted to do in Vienna, so he could get a Pork Hock. By then, it was little warmer, so we could sit in the biergarten. He got his two pound pork hock (which he still talks about constantly 3 months later). He said he was doing Man vs. Food, if anyone has seen that show on travel channel. The Prater is really cool. A mixture of Six Flags and a “Meet Me in St. Louis” 1904 style World’s Fair. On Tuesday, we went from Vienna to Salzburg. It was a lot of time on the bus. We were supposed to see Melk Abbey. Well, Dean pointed it out from the highway; I didn’t even get a picture it went by so fast far off I the distance. However, we did stop for a picture stop of the castle that Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in. Now that was cool! Fair trade in my opinion. We drove through the lake district, which was gorgeous. The eastern part of the country is not what you picture when you think of Austria: very flat, lots of farms, like Illinois. We stopped in Gmunden, I think it was, for lunch in the lake district. There was a beautiful lake with lots of sailboats and a mountain in the background. Breathtaking! The old village square had a glockenspiel that we got to see go off. Much simpler than the one in Munich, which I will get to later. There were fountains and flowers, too. Cute town! We also stopped in Mondsee to see the church from the Sound of Music where Maria married the Captain in the movie. That was neat. I had my second apple strudel there, too, which was my favorite as it had a warm vanilla sauce. I had an apple strudel everywhere we went, and they were all different. Our hotel in Salzburg had an incredible view of the city with the fortress in the background. We had dinner in the rooftop restaurant with panoramic views of the city. That was the best part of that dinner, as the food was terrible. All I remember from it was the pancake soup. Trust me, it’s as weird as it sounds. It was so cold on Wednesday, and raining. Apparently, that is the usual weather in Salzburg. We had our sightseeing tour anyway. This one was all on foot. We got to see the fountain and statues from the movie where they sing “Do Re Mi”, as well as the graveyard where they “claim” it was shot (Our guide said it was actually shot on the lot in Hollywood). We also saw Mozart’s statue and his houses. There are two. Unfortunately, I couldn’t talk my Dad into those during our free time. : ( I am obsessed with the wrought iron signs on all of the shops. The streets are very narrow (so narrow we almost got run over by a truck) and the signs all stick out into the center of the street. It is a really cool effect. During our free time, we took the funicular up to the fortress. That was rather interesting, but I wish I had done the houses instead. The fortress was on my list, but it doesn’t stick out much in my mind now. Awesome views, though, as promised. We went to a café afterward to warm up. Oh so cold! And in July! I had a really good soup. We did not do the optionals in Vienna, but we had to do the Eagle’s Nest. That was definitely worth it. I took 200 pictures of the drive up the mountains. We stopped at the gazebo on the way, so if you want to see that, you have to do the optional. About halfway up, we had to stop to change buses. We had less than ten minutes to use the bathroom. It was so cold, in the 40s. With the line for the ladies room really long, as usual, I asked my Dad to get me a sweatshirt. I did not expect that weather, so all I had was a raincoat and thin sweater. Anyway, I come out the bathroom, and my Dad is trying to buy two fleeces. The lady starts asking me for my card. It turns out my Dad wasn’t giving her enough money because they were 140 Euros! We got them but I was like I can’t even go the bathroom! My Dad could not be left alone for 5 minutes! But, they are very nice jackets, and we weren’t cold the rest of the trip. But, they have a real racket going there. They are the only sweatshirts they have. So, if you go, bring warm clothes. When you get up to the Eagle’s Nest, you walk down this REALLY LONG, dark tunnel to get to the elevators that take you up. It is creepy, but they are wide because the Nazis drove their cars to the elevators. Oh, and Hitler was only here like twice because he was afraid of heights, so it is not Hitler’s house or anything. It is now a restaurant, so there is no museum or furniture or anything. It was so misty that we couldn’t see much from the top, but the mist was fun to watch as it blew upwards. They put us in a room to watch a 20 minute movie about the place. A lot of people fell asleep. I had to keep elbowing my Dad. We did get hot chocolate included, which was yummy and much needed. Overall, I would recommend it for the views on the ride up and the atmosphere. It was a fun experience. That night, we had our “Be My Guest” dinner at a brewery, which turned out to be a cute place. The food was soooooo good and served family style. We got to try the beer that they brew, too. The owner came around to everyone’s table to talk. He was a hoot. We stayed there for three hours because some local guys came in with instruments and started playing music. We were told this only happens once a month, and it just so happened to be while we were there. One of the musicians got the waitress to dance with him, so we got to see the slapdancing before the Tyrolean folk show the next night. My Dad got the girl at our table to dance with him and several from our tour started dancing, too. I am so glad they added it to the tour as it was new this year. The bus was very rowdy on the way back, and one of the girls took Dean’s mic and acted like she was the guide. She’s a very funny girl from New York with a thick New York accent. On Thursday, we moved on to Innsbruck. In the morning, we stopped in Berchtesgaden, which is where the Eagle’s Nest is. We didn’t see it the day before. This was the first town that had the frescos on the sides of the buildings, which I was so excited to see. The views of the mountains were spectacular! I wish we would have had more time there. I got several souvenirs and gifts in the cute little shops there. I wanted a cuckoo clock, but luckily my Dad talked me out of it. How would I have got it home in one piece with just my carry on size suitcase? (You definitely don’t want to take a lot of luggage, as I have found out on my many travels.) We made it to Innsbruck with the whole afternoon to explore. I loved Innsbruck. I could have spent a week there. With only a few hours there, I have more pictures of it than anywhere else. Plus, the sun came out and we had a beautiful day. We didn’t have a local guide there. Dean just took us to the Golden Roof (a must see!) a told us our options. We walked all over to the big square and the bridge that Innnsbruck is named for. Such wonderful views of the mountains. From the bridge, with the rushing water under it, with the mountains all around and the town with all of the pastel colored buildings, oh my goodness! My Dad finally got to buy his Scnapps there. Afterward, I realized it was the same place Samantha Brown went on her travel show. Innsbruck also has a palace ( another cool view with the golden palace and the mountains looming behind it.) and the wrought iron signs. The dinner at the hotel that not was not good, again. We did the optional that night of the Tyrolean Folk show. I had read how hokey it was and people said it wasn’t worth the time or money. But, I’m so glad I did not listen. I couldn’t recommend it more. We were in the second row from the stage. It is a family doing the show and they do the slapdancing, yodeling, and demonstrate several local instruments, including the big long horns. They use axes on logs to do the mountaineers dance. It was really cool. It is all tourists and may be a little hokey but it is all good fun. On Friday, we finally went to Neuschwanstein. I have wanted to do that for a long time. It really does look like Cinderella’s castle at Disney World, but only if they moved it to the most beautiful mountain surrounding you can think of. There were even waterfalls. This far surpassed my expectations. It was straight out of a fairytale. We did have to wait 30 minutes in the rain to get in for our tour. They have rules about how long you have to spend waiting there. Very weird! The tour was so worth it though. Each room was more opulent than the last. Lots of gold leaf and frescos of course. Lots of themes from Wagner operas, too, even a cave. The theater that Mad King Ludwig built for the operas had the best acoustics ever. Opera singers would sound incredible in there. Our guide was so cute. A blond, blue eyed guy, who was so incredibly good-looking he should be in Hollywood. It wasn’t very long, though. Like 45 minutes, I think. The walk back down from the castle took forever. Great scenery, but very steep. I didn’t think we would make it to the bus on time. We had about an hour, and we made it with like a minute to spare. But, we had a giant pretzel from the concession stand before we went down. Best pretzel I have ever had!.. and I like my pretzels at baseball games. (Go Cardinals! World Series game 6 tonight!) On the way to Munich, we also stopped in Oberammergau. I loved the frescos on the buildings and the window boxes (which were everywhere we went, but they look cooler with the frescos next to them). Even the Insurance office had a fresco. We didn’t have much time, and it started raining. We got to peek into the stadium where they do the passion play every ten years. They were rehearsing for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. My Dad bought an ornament with the manager scene carved out of wood for my Mom at one of the shops. I thought they would have a lot more souvenir shops than they did. They did have the most wonderful bakery. I got this Viennese cookie sandwich filled with chocolate with the ends dipped in chocolate. Oh my gosh! That night we skipped the Hofbrauhaus optional. They didn’t actually eat there, and we had a few more days in Munich. We ate at the hotel (the Hilton), which turned out to be very good. Pork and potato dumplings. On Saturday, we had our sightseeing tour around Munich (we did not have a local guide here, either). Most of this was on the bus, as we went by the Olympic stadium. It was raining hard, so I guess that was good. Dean took us to the Marienplatz and then, we had free time from there. I had planned on going to the art museums, but they were far away. It was raining so hard that we just decided to go somewhere close. Luckily, for me, the Residenz was close by. We got to tour that with audio guides (most palaces have audio guides now, which I love). You would think we would be palaced out by then, but no. They were all different. This one you could take pictures in, which was not the case in the others. So, just for that, I was glad we did it. I liked learning about the Wittlesbachs. They have the longest running father to son monarchy in Europe at around 800 years. (I bet Henry VIII was jealous.) The grotto in the courtyard was very unusual, as well. Afterwards, we ran back to the Marienplatz to see the glockenspiel go off, as it only does twice a day. That is neat to see. It lasts twelve minutes with the top part going with a joust (the white knight wins against the black Hapsburg, of course. The black one falls over backwards off the horse, funny.) then the bottom with dancing brewers with hops. We had time to go back to the Odionplatz before the afternoon optional. The optional, sigh! I let my Dad talk me into signing up for Dachau concentration camp. I regret this and don’t want to think about it. I wish I hadn’t gone. It was awful! I got really upset and went to sit in the café for 1 ½ hours. That is all I’m going to say about it. That night we had the farewell dinner at a restaurant. The food was good there (potato dumplings again, yummy!). It was a fun evening, but ended pretty early. I guess that was good, though as my Dad and I got up to meet our train to Bregenz at 7am. I definitely recommend the train. It is very easy to use and no hassle. The train station in Munich is very nice, as well. Bregenz was not what I expected as I thought it would be a small town on Lake Constance. It was a big metropolitan city. We had tickets for the Bregenzer Festipiel, which is a big opera festival. I definitely recommend it, even to those who don’t like opera much. The stage is a big floating set on Lake Constance. It was so elaborate. The singers were diving off the stage into the freezing water. They had acrobats doing flips in the air while dangling on wires from the set. I can’t put it into words. On Monday, we went back to Munich for one more day before we flew home. We did the hop-on, hop-off bus around the city. The sun came out that day and it was actually warm. A perfect last day. We went to the church with the Devil’s footprint (I don’t remember the name). Not really worth an effort unless you are by it. Pretty church, but it is a tennis shoe print. Kind of funny. We, then, finally went to the Hofbrauhaus mid-afternoon. My Dad was so excited. We were actually able to find a small table by where they fill the glasses. No bench with strangers for us. We had heard it was hard to get waited on, but we had an awesome waiter. The food was good (My Dad had another pork hock.) Now, I am not a fan of beer AT ALL, but I had a radler: half beer, half lemonade. I was able to drink it. (I guess that is a big thing mixing lemonade with stuff. At the Prater, I thought I ordered a lemonade, I got half lemonade, half cola, yuck!) My Dad had the biggest beer I have ever seen. Probably a six pack in there. It was fun. Everyone has to visit a bierhaus while in Germany. It was a great trip! The Sound of Music is a wonderful tour! I don’t think I will try to go back to Germany and Austria (I have been to the UK and Ireland many times, and I still want to go back!), but I am glad that I went. This was my first Trafalgar tour, and I enjoyed it immensely. I would heartily recommend it! It was very different from what I had done before. The tours I had been on were the 18-35 year old ones that stay in hostels. Quite a step up to the Hilton!"
